I was sad to read that Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) shot himself in the heart on Saturday. He made some good music, but making stuff isn’t everything.
“Its a wonderful life” is probably his most recognizable, and its a sad one. Before reading about his death this a.m. I read in the Bible (Eph. 5:29) “After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it” and I thought “that’s not really super true” and started some research on the “inerrency” and “infallibility” of the Bible.
“The sense of inerrancy that is most in line with Christian tradition means that the Scriptures are always right (do not err) in fulfilling their purpose: revealing God, God’s vision, God’s purposes, and God’s good news to humanity”. (Robinson, B.A. “Inerrancy: Is the Bible free of error? All points of view.’)
The point, I guess, is that the purpose of scripture (of all religious traditions) is to reveal God, God’s vision, purpose and news to humans. Religions take hold of these scriptures to learn what God has to say.
Anyways, here’s a video by Guy Maddin set to “its a wonderful life”:
